Rare Medieval ring found in Somerset field set for auction. May 2. 01. 5Rare Medieval ring found in Somerset field. EVERY metal detectorist dreams of finding hidden treasure as they sweep their devices, trance like, across the land. For one Somerset enthusiast the fantasy became an amazing reality when he unearthed a rare Medieval gold Saint George ring in a farmer’s field as rain lashed around him.“I knew straight away it was an item of significance. It was a moment of complete excitement,” said gardener Paul Saxton, 5. It was also a moment of potential danger as the heavens opened and a rainstorm raged – not the best combination as Paul wielded his metal detector.“Old gold has a lustre to it. It comes out of the land as clean as it goes in,” said Paul, who has been metal detecting for around 1. He is curious to know the history of the ring and how it came to be in the field. He thinks it may have been lost while its owner was out riding, but that’s just a theory. It is also incredibly small – the face of the ring on which the saint is engraved is a mere 0. Could it have belonged to a noblewoman?“I was the first person to handle it in hundreds of years,” added history enthusiast Paul who has logged the find with the Museum of Somerset. Paul had visited the site of the discovery before but never turned up anything more interesting than some Roman coins and nothing of value. He is thrilled with his find and is eagerly awaiting its auction at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Taunton salerooms on Thursday, June 4. The firm’s jewellery and silver expert, John Kelly, has dated the ring to the early 1. Century. He believes it is likely the ring belonged to a nobleman as gold at this time would have been in extremely short supply and the preserve of only the richest. The ring has an elongated octagonal table engraved with an image of Saint George and the Dragon in shallow relief. George is wearing armour created by incised lines. The visor of his helmet is up and face exposed. Driving his spear into the mouth of the dragon, his classic pose. To his left hand is a small triangular shield engraved with the cross of Saint George. The dragon, on its back, with gaping jaws and a tail running up and framing part of the bezel. The shank tapers in width from shoulders to the back, decorated with diagonal lines of pellets and inlaid with bands of flower heads on stems having several petals at the base interspersed with oval seeds or fruit. Adjacent to the bezel on these broad bands are recessed ray motifs with traces at two points of white enamel surviving. The inside of the shank is plain. Down one edge of each shoulder, a row of stamped pellets make the border. The hoop is slightly damaged and bent out of shape. St George usurped St Edmund as Patron Saint of England in the early 1. Century. He also became the Patron Saint of the Order of the Garter - the most senior and oldest British Order of Chivalry founded by Edward III in 1. The ring has a pre- sale guide of . It will be on view on Saturday, May 3. The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, along with the rest of the auction lots. The sale will also be on view on Tuesday, June 2, and Wednesday, June 3, from 9am- 5. The auction gets underway at 1. Thursday, June 4. For more information please contact the saleroom on (0.
